Ultrasound

Ultrasound is an imaging procedure that is safe, noninvasive, painless, and radiation-free.

It uses a technology where high-frequency sound waves are transmitted into a specified body part through a hand held probe with the help of special ultrasound gel. This technique allows the machine to direct sound waves into an area of interest and record the specific sound waves that are directed back from the body through the transducer into a computer that converts them into ultrasound images. The highly trained technologists that perform our procedures obtain sets of very specific images so that our radiologists can review them, interpret the findings, and generate reports that provide valuable information to your doctor regarding your health.

We perform ultrasound procedures for a variety of reasons on both children and adults including:

  • Abdomen: to assess the organs of the abdomen for a variety of illnesses.
  • Appendix: to assess the appendix in pediatric patients and pregnant women.
  • Breast: to assess benign and malignant processes and to screen for breast cancer in women with dense breasts.
  • Musculoskeletal: to evaluate a few specific types of musculoskeletal abnormalities.
  • Neck: to assess palpable findings or to assess neck lymph nodes in patients that have been treated for thyroid cancer.
  • OB/GYN: to assess both benign and malignant processes of the uterus and ovaries and to evaluate first trimester pregnancies.
  • Renal/Bladder: to assess the kidneys and urinary bladder for benign and malignant processes.
  • Scrotum: to assess benign and malignant processes.
  • Thyroid: to assess benign and malignant processes.
  • Vascular: to evaluate blood vessels in the body for areas of narrowing, dilatation, or blood clot, such as in the carotid arteries, aorta and its immediate branches, upper and lower extremity veins, portal venous system, etc.

Once scheduled for an ultrasound, our office will call you and give you detailed instruction on how to prepare for your exam.
